Football in the Seychelles
Football is the most popular of the 29 sports officially registered with the Ministry of Sport in the Seychelles. The group of islands is home to 80,000 people. Despite this relatively small pool of potential players, the Seychelles Football Federation takes part in all FIFA and CAF endorsed competitions. During the qualifying competition for the African Cup of Nations 2004, the national team celebrated two impressive victories - against Eritrea and most notably Zimbabwe.
The third Goal project
On 3 December 2006, the Goal Bureau gave its first ever approval to projects from member associations who had already benefited from Goal on two previous occasions. An international-size artificial turf pitch is under construction in Praslin in the Seychelles, which will facilitate the staging of national team matches and will be of inestimable value to the country's entire footballing infrastructure. The Seychelles government is actively contributing to the project through building work, which will help to keep the total cost at a reasonable level.
