Football in New Caledonia
This French overseas territory of some 240,000 inhabitants is situated in the Pacific Ocean some 1,500 km east of Australia and 2,000 km north of New Zealand. Affiliated to FIFA since only 2004, the Caledonian FA has 8,552 registered players in 120 clubs.
The first Goal project
On 21 March 2007, the Goal Bureau approved the first part of the overall project, consisting of the laying of an artificial turf pitch with perimeter fencing. The overall project comprises a technical centre with two pitches (one natural turf and the other artificial), dressing rooms and an office building. The facility in the commune of Paita, which is located halfway between the airport and the capital, Noumea, was jointly financed by FIFA, the Oceania Football Confederation (as infrastructure provider) and the governments of New Caledonia and South Province.
