Football in Nicaragua
In Nicaragua, baseball is all the rage. Although football is not far behind in terms of the number of men and women players, it cannot (yet) compete with Major League Baseball, which is directly supported by the USA. Success has been thin on the ground but the association is hoping that the Goal project and the application of long-term plans will continually inject new life into football.
Goal Football Project
The establishment of the Goal Football project series marks a new chapter in the history of the Goal Programme: for the first time, funds from this source will be used to specifically assist promising young players. In Nicaragua, promising young players will be assisted from January 2009 through a two-year programme to prepare them for a professional career in football. When selecting participants, the focus will be on young players from disadvantaged backgrounds. In addition, a football academy will be constructed for the national mens and womens teams. These activities will make full use of the infrastructure of the technical centre built with funding from the Goal Programme.
