Football in Mauritania
As in the majority of African countries, football is the number one sport in Mauritania. Mauritania belongs to the group of countries that regularly register for FIFA and AFC qualifying competitions. Although Mauritanian football success stories have been few and far between, it is to be hoped that the quality of football will improve as a direct result of the Goal project. There are already a considerable number of professionals under the guidance of top coaches such as Sneïdry, Birama Gaye and Moussda Ould Ghassoum. However, following the team's disappointing showing in the 2004 African Cup of Nations, Ghassoum was replaced.
Third Goal project
The dry climate in Nouakchott, the location of the technical centre of the Mauritanian football association, severely restricts the number of training opportunities for footballers. For that reason, the third Goal project, which was approved by the Goal Bureau on 22 October 2008, will focus on the installation of a third artificial turf pitch (one of which was laid as part of the Win in Africa with Africa initiative). This third pitch will considerably increase the number of training facilities available to young players. There is already an agreement in place with the Ministry of Youth and Sport regarding the use of the pitch.
