Football in Ethiopia
Ethiopian sport is famous for its excellent long and medium distance runners such as Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele. Nonetheless, football occupies an important position in Ethiopian sporting life, and in fact Ethiopia is one of the founders of international African football, having participated in the first-ever Africa Cup of Nations, which at the time was contested by only three teams.
The first Goal project
The Ethiopian Football Federation presented a proposed project to the Goal Bureau on 1 December 2009 with a view to providing national and youth teams with international-standard pitches playable in all conditions at the national technical centre in Ambo. An artificial and a natural turf pitch will provide the necessary conditions to improve the standard of elite football in Ethiopia and facilitate the implementation of programmes to develop youth and women's football.
