Football in Ecuador
Football is by far and away the number one sport in Ecuador and qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan? has been the most significant triumph to date. Two players, Ulises de la Cruz and Agustin Delgado, have gained moves to England, playing for Aston Villa and Southampton respectively. On the other hand, Ecuadorean coaches seldom work abroad. Conversely, clubs in Ecuador often employ coaches from neighbouring countries. But the country does have excellent footballing facilities. The stadiums of Barcelona and Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito are two of the best in the whole of South America.
The second Goal project
Now that a multifunctional office and administration building has been erected and inaugurated in Guayaquil, it is the turn of the various national teams to enjoy the privilege of a technical centre to be built especially for them in Quito. These teams have for years been made to train in inadequate conditions in a military camp. The current project has the financial backing of the government, municipal authorities and the association itself, and running costs will be defrayed by money from sponsors and gate receipts.
