Football in Ecuador
Football is by far and away the number one sport in Ecuador and qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan? has been the most significant triumph to date. Two players, Ulises de la Cruz and Agustin Delgado, have gained moves to England, playing for Aston Villa and Southampton respectively. On the other hand, Ecuadorean coaches seldom work abroad. Conversely, clubs in Ecuador often employ coaches from neighbouring countries. But the country does have excellent footballing facilities. The stadiums of Barcelona and Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito are two of the best in the whole of South America.
The first Goal Project
The Ecuador FA's new offices and technical centre in Guayaquil, financed with money provided by Goal, FIFA's Financial Assistance Programme and the national association itself, was opened in November 2004. The new complex will help to intensify long-term football development work in Ecuador. A variety of training programmes are planned, particularly at youth level, as foundations need to be put in place to ensure success in the future.
