Football in Costa Rica
Football is indisputably the king of sports in Costa Rica. Several appearances at final competitions of FIFA championships and numerous players (such as Paulo Cesar Wanchope at Manchester City/England, Winston Parks at Udinese/Italy or Ronald Gomez at Oti Creta/Greece), who have broken into top European leagues, bear testimony to the quality of Costa Rican football. The national association conducts one of the best youth development programmes in Central America, guaranteeing success and consistency in their football development. Ten players who had played for U-17 and U-20 national teams at previous FIFA world championships reappeared at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™.
Third Goal project
In a further extension to the sports complex in San António de Belén, new rooms were built in the shared-access comfort area, including a dining room and kitchen, medical rooms and a rest area for the national teams. The purpose of this extension was to provide suitable conditions for preparing and bringing together Costa Rica's national teams, but also to optimise the whole sports complex. The Goal Bureau approved this project on 2 June 2009.
