Football on the Cayman Islands
Football is the most popular sport on the Cayman Islands, but a targeted, coordinated development plan was only recently launched. Success will not come overnight and the football-crazy islanders must patiently await their first taste of success. A number of national association officials sit on committees of CONCACAF and FIFA, and also occupy strategic positions during various international competitions.
The first Goal Project
Following two years of planning, the Cayman Islands Football Association submitted plans for a national training centre, which were approved by the Goal Bureau on 22 September 2004. The centre was built in several phases, starting with the construction of accommodation for national teams. This complex provides the various national teams with ideal conditions in which to prepare for international matches. It plays host to various courses organised as part of the association's development and football promotion programmes and to training sessions for the country's most talented young footballers in all age categories.
