Football in Bulgaria
Football is clearly the number one sport in Bulgaria. The greatest success for Bulgarian football in recent years was the fourth-place finish at the 1994 FIFA World Cup? in the USA. Bulgaria also won the International Youth Tournament (U-19) in 1959, 1969 and 1974, secured the Bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, and went one better 12 years later in Mexico City, when the team took home the Silver medal. Hristo Stoitchkov (Barcelona, Parma, etc), Krasimir Balakov (Sporting Lisbon, VfB Stuttgart), Luboslav Penev (various Spanish clubs), Marian Hristov (1. FC Kaiserslautern) and Georgi Aspauhov (Levski Sofia) are just a few of the names who have made Bulgarian football famous.
The Goal Project
At its meeting on 15 February 2001, the Goal Bureau added Bulgaria to the list of beneficiaries of the Goal Programme. After various delays, the Goal Bureau approved the project on 15 October 2003.
