Football in Benin
When the national team qualified for the finals of the 2004 African Cup of Nations, it became the first ever Benin team to do so. Qualification gave a further boost to the most popular sport in Benin and is sure to attract the attention of a new set of fans. Until now, only Moussa Latoundji has played professional football abroad, for Energie Cottbus in Germany. However, this will surely change soon.
Second Goal project
After completion of the technical centre that will greatly improve sports facilities in Benin, in early October 2006 the Goal Bureau approved a second project to build association headquarters that will help Benin's "House of Football" to become reality. The association's objective is to improve its administrative services by creating better working conditions in a suitable environment and by employing more personnel at all levels. This project will also involve modern installations and facilities at the technical centre, which will in turn make it easier to realise education and development programmes. The government has confirmed that it will provide the necessary land.
