- Located in: London, England and Glasgow, Scotland
Short Description:
The idea for Street League was conceived in 2001 when Damian
Hatton, whose close contact with homeless and dispossessed persons
prompted him to question their circumstances. Hatton then realised
that they all lacked one important element in life-fun. His
concerns led him to establish a street football league for homeless
persons in London. From a few phone calls to homeless hostels
around London, a 16 team tournament was held soon after and the
demand for the service has continued to grow. Street League, a
streetfootballworld network member since 2002, uses football in
combination with education and training programs to transform the
lives of its participating members. It builds on the principles of
inclusiveness, sustainability and diversity, with the aim of
promoting healthy lifestyles, social integration, crime reduction,
non-formal education and long term employment.
Target Group:
- Disadvantaged and homeless persons
Thematic Field(s):
- Children's Rights & Education

Support in the Framework of the Football for Hope
Movement:
Football for Hope is supporting the creation of the
"Player Progression Programme", an additional training
course that provides players with employment, training and
educational directions. The participants will be graduates of
Street League's existing programme Directions 2 Work who would
otherwise drift out of contact with Street League. This programme
is designed to provide one-to-one support and establish a job
research centre for players among other measures. The programme
will run over a two year period with the aim to assist the
progression of 150 players by the end of year one and 300 by the
end of the second year.
