Basic Information
- Founded in: 1989
- Located in: Greater Atlanta area with affiliates throughout the USA
Short Description:
Soccer in the Streets uses soccer to teach disadvantaged kids
in underserved communities how to make positive choices in life.
The hallmark of the organisation is Positive-Choice Soccer, a
weekly programme that combines the teaching of soccer and life
skills. As children progress in the programme, they are offered the
opportunity to participate in traditional leagues. Children are
also selected to receive career training in the fields of coaching,
refereeing, management, communications, etc. Youths play on mini
pitches called "street boxes", a modified soccer field -
roughly the size of a tennis court - complete with an all-weather
playing surface, permanent goals and durable waist-high plastic
perimeter boards. The "street boxes" are designed for use
in urban areas where soccer facilities are often lacking. The
organisation, a streetfootballworld network member since 2002,
works within the metropolitan area of Atlanta and with 17 different
affiliates throughout the U.S. In 2006 over 4,000 kids got involved
with Soccer in the Streets.

sixteen

Support in the Framework of the Football for Hope
Movement:
Football for Hope's support of the project "Escuela
de Vida" (School of Life) is offering an additional programme
for youths who have graduated successfully from Soccer in the
Street's introductory programme "Positive-Choice
Soccer". The "Escuela de Vida" is an intensive
after-school programme during which the participants receive
tutoring, specialized soccer and fitness training, career training
and the opportunity for work experiences during summer. The aim of
the programme is to support outstanding youths on their way to
entering the job market, increase representation of minorities
within the US soccer industry and to produce qualified future
instructors for Soccer in the Streets activities.
