Short Description:
The Single Leg Amputee Sports Club Sierra Leone (SLASC) has
been set up with the main objective to provide trauma recovery for
war amputees (about 6000 affected people throughout the country),
engage in peace-building projects, become involved in national and
international sports, provide protective devices and social
services, and provide facilities and employment to their target
group. Disabled people are often ostracised and sport (football) is
seen as an ideal means of (re-)integration in society and
self-empowerment.

Support in the Framework of the Football for Hope
Movement:
Football for Hope is supporting the "Educate the
community through promotion tour" (awareness-raising on sports
for people with disabilities). This includes capacity building of
10 coaches, mobilisation of more soccer players with a disability
and a media attention campaign. In addition, SLASC provides
participants counselling services to advance trauma recovery for
war amputees. It also engages in peace building projects aimed to
heal psychosocial stress and offer physical rehabilitation through
sporting activities.
