  • Located in: Freetown, Sierra Leone

Short Description:
The Single Leg Amputee Sports Club Sierra Leone (SLASC) has been set up with the main objective to provide trauma recovery for war amputees (about 6000 affected people throughout the country), engage in peace-building projects, become involved in national and international sports, provide protective devices and social services, and provide facilities and employment to their target group. Disabled people are often ostracised and sport (football) is seen as an ideal means of (re-)integration in society and self-empowerment.

Target Group:

  • War amputees across Sierra Leone

Thematic Field(s):

  • Anti-Discrimination and Social Integration

Support in the Framework of the Football for Hope Movement:
Football for Hope is supporting the "Educate the community through promotion tour" (awareness-raising on sports for people with disabilities). This includes capacity building of 10 coaches, mobilisation of more soccer players with a disability and a media attention campaign. In addition, SLASC provides participants counselling services to advance trauma recovery for war amputees. It also engages in peace building projects aimed to heal psychosocial stress and offer physical rehabilitation through sporting activities.
