Short Description:
The ethnic groups of Rwanda today still struggle with the sad legacy of the 1994 genocide. In the search for justice and peaceful coexistence, Espérance seeks to fight the ethnic divide of the Rwandan population through education and social programs, establishing in 2002 the program "Football for Peace". The streetfootballworld network member (since 2002) uses football as a tool not only to reconcile differences within the population, but also to make aware dire issues, which deeply affect the communities and youths. Football tournaments are run in conjunction with AIDS awareness activities. Over 300 youths are trained on the football field each year and many more partake in other activities run by the organisation. The youths are not just educated; rather they are trained to be educators themselves.

Target Group:

  • Youth between the ages of 8-19 years

Thematic Field(s):

  • Peace Building
  • Health Promotion
  • Children's Rights & Education
  • Anti-discrimination & Social Integration

Support in the Framework of the Football for Hope Movement:
Football for Hope is supporting the improvement of Espérance's established programme 'Football for Peace in the Great Lakes Region'. Support is focussed on the organisation of 30 de-centralised co-ed football for peace events across the region. Other objectives include the organisation of seminars for staff and projected partners, capacity building programmes for coaches and technical assistants around street football-based projects, conflict management and sports event planning and management, as well as a Great Lakes Conference on "Social Inclusion through Football".
