Short Description:
For the last 20 years, MYSA of the Mathare slum in Nairobi,
Kenya, has been an exemplar of good practice in social development
through football claiming over 14,000 young participants. Through a
'self-help' approach, they have managed to successfully
link football to environmental clean-ups, HIV/Aids
awareness/prevention, leadership training and other community
service activities. The organisation, a streetfootballworld network
member since 2002, even features a football club that currently
competes in the top professional football league of Kenya. And all
that while placing particular focus on female participation as just
one of the factors for the overall development of the greater
Nairobi community.
Target Group:
Boys and girls generally under 16 years of age in the Mathare
Valley; Youth, slum dwellers who want to make a difference for
themselves and their community.
Thematic Field(s):
- Children's Rights and Education
- Environment
- Health Promotion
- Anti-discrimination and Social Integration
- Peace and Reconciliation.
Support in the Framework of the Football for Hope
Movement:
Football for Hope is supporting the enhancement of MYSA's
ongoing Sports Programme activities. This includes the
decentralisation of the Sports Programme's governance, training
activities and equipment to the 16 MYSA zones (to create 16
"mini-MYSAs"), the increase in the number and the quality
of inter-zonal tournaments, especially for girls and the
consolidation, re-organisation and digitalisaiton of MYSA's
player files and documents into a comprehensive database and
archive.
In 2006, MYSA received Football for Hope support towards two innovative initiatives: the International Girls Football Tournament and a coaching exchange with the Rumbek Youth Sports Association from neighbouring Sudan. In 2007, the support for the annual International Girls Football Tournament was renewed.
