The social networking service Twitter is celebrating its anniversary, six years after its founder Jack Dorsey sent the first ever tweet back in March 2006. Since then over 200 million people have started to use the platform, including FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.

"As a former sports journalist, I decided to find out more about Twitter and discovered that it was a new form of media that is short and to the point," said Blatter. "Throughout my life, I have been involved in communications. Football is all about communication and about bringing people together, both on and off the pitch. When I was still a sports journalist, we had to keep in touch by telephone or telex – communications are developing all the time. Twitter is the new trend – it's short and to the point. I find tweeting really exciting."

Football as a way of life, going beyond sport – that is the core of my message, and I hope to be able to contribute to this via Twitter.

The head of world football's governing body actually has the third most popular Twitter account in Switzerland with over 230,000 followers. In a recently-published list by 10vor10, a Swiss TV programme, he was ranked ahead of such famous names as cycling star Fabian Cancellara and tennis pro Stanislas Wawrinka.

"I'm delighted to be on this list," said the FIFA President with regard to his numerous followers, "but what's more important for me is always being present and being totally open when using this new means of communication. I want to show people what the FIFA President does, outline the socio-cultural role of football and convey the emotions behind it. FIFA's aim is to integrate football, with its values such as discipline, fair play and respect, into society and help to shape a better future. FIFA has a message, and a positive one at that: football is life, football is joy, football is hope. Football as a way of life, going beyond sport – that is the core of my message, and I hope to be able to contribute to this via Twitter."
