FIFA President writes to Turkey

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter has written to the President of Turkey in the wake of the earthquake which affected the country in the Van province on Sunday 23 October.

Hundreds of people have lost their lives and an unknown number are still trapped under rubble. Casualties are reported to be high in the town of Ercis, close to the Iranian border, where dozens of buildings fell.

In a letter from the FIFA President to Dr. Abdullah Gul, the President of the Republic of Turkey, he wrote: “On behalf of the entire football family, we wish to express our profound sadness at the news of the violent earthquake.

“In the name of the international football community, we would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to the people of Turkey, particularly the families of the victims.”

The FIFA President also said that "our thoughts and sympathy are with you all at this time of sadness."
