Ethiopian football – meeting yesterday at FIFA

The President of the Ethiopian Football Federation, Dr Ashebir Woldegiorgis, and representatives of the group led by Ahmed Yassin met at the Home of FIFA today, 18 November 2008, under the chair of the FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke in order to discuss possible solutions to the ongoing crisis in Ethiopian football. The representative of the Ethiopian government cancelled the participation at short notice.

Jérôme Valcke reminded the representatives of the necessity to adhere to the road map that had been decided by FIFA and CAF after the meeting of 22 February 2008 and that had been confirmed at consecutive FIFA Executive Committee meetings. The road map included in particular the recognition of Dr Woldegiorgis as the elected and rightful President of the Ethiopian Football Federation, the handover of the EFF headquarters as well as a procedure to eventually organise an elective congress.

Unfortunately, the representatives of the group led by Ahmed Yassin could not agree to the principle that football is to be run by the recognised and elected President of the Federation. FIFA explained clearly that it will continue to follow its principles and that two different offices cannot be allowed to organise football in one country.

FIFA regrets that no solution could be found at this meeting and that there was no constructive effort to hand over the EFF headquarters as requested by FIFA and CAF in order to bring Ethiopian football back into the international football family. The Ethiopian Football Federation remains suspended from FIFA in accordance with art. 14 par. 1 of the FIFA Statutes.
