The IFAB, past and present

Ahead of the 125th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), set to take place on Saturday 5 March 2011 in Newport, Wales, what better moment to look back at the history of this footballing institution?

Topping the agenda this Saturday will be the issue of goal-line technology, with the IFAB AGM also set to give an update on the status of the ongoing experiment with two additional assistant referees. On a related matter, UEFA’s request to continue this experiment at UEFA EURO 2012 will be examined.

However, well before these important issues were even brought to the table, the IFAB has already dealt with a host of others. Are you aware how the Laws of the Game have evolved over time? Or even who makes up the IFAB?

For everything you need to know about this year’s hosts the Welsh FA, host venue Celtic Manor, the history of the IFAB’s annual meetings, documents and photos from years gone by and more information on the global context which surrounded the IFAB’s creation back in 1886, FIFA has produced a brochure which can now be viewed on FIFA.com.
