Salguero appointed OC Chairman

Rafael Salguero from Guatemala, who is a member of the Executive Committees of both FIFA and CONCACAF, has taken on the role of Chairman of the Organising Committee of the FIFA U-20 World Cup ahead of the Colombia 2011 edition, which is set to kick off later this month.

The appointment was approved by FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter on 11 July, after it had been confirmed that former FIFA vice-president Jack A. Warner had resigned from the role on 20 June. The 65-year-old Salguero will also act as the head of FIFA’s delegation in Colombia, where the 18th edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup will be held between 29 July and 20 August.

“It’s a pleasure and an honour to attend the FIFA U-20 World Cup Colombia 2011 as Chairman of the Organising Committee and of the FIFA delegation,” said Salguero, who took the opportunity to express his confidence in the event’s success. “I’m sure that this competition, the first that Colombia have hosted at this level, will be a complete success and will leave an important legacy in the host nation.

“I’m also very interested in seeing the latest young stars of the world game,” he continued. “It’s no coincidence that stars like Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Spain’s Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez have appeared in the final of this competition in recent years, with all three going on to be chosen as the world’s best players at the most recent FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala.”
