England produced a brilliant comeback to claim an action-packed 3-2 win over Russia to keep their quarter-final hopes alive at UEFA Women's EURO 2009 in Helsinki, Finland.

Hope Powell's side lost 2-1 to Italy in their opening game of the campaign on Tuesday and looked in severe danger of a second defeat.

Ksenia Tsybutovich put Russia ahead after just two minutes, and Olesya Kurochkina made it two with just ten minutes on the clock. But England managed to pull themselves together and got back into the game through Karen Carney after 24 minutes.

Eniola Aluko then levelled just after the half-hour, and England remarkably went in front courtesy of Kelly Smith's excellent strike, just three minutes before the interval.

Neither side was able to convert any of numerous chances in an equally entertaining second half, but England were delighted to claim all three points.
