Having won the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year in each of the past five years and scored more international goals than she has international caps Marta has already ensured that her name will feature prominently in women’s football’s record books.

Marta, who has scored 76 goals in 69 games for the Brazilian national team, was part of the Brazil squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the USA at the age of 17 before becoming a key member of the Brazil team who reached the final of the next edition of the event in China 2007, winning the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot.

However, her life in football has not always been easy. “When I started playing there were no teams and no structure so I had to play with the boys. I get very emotional when I think about the humiliation that I’ve suffered playing football” says Marta, “however, things are getting better for women’s football”.

Marta, who is now playing for Western New York Flash along with fellow Live Your Goals ambassador Christine Sinclair, has a clear message for the next generation of women’s footballers:

“Never give up and be confident in what you do. There may be tough times but the difficulties which you face will make you more determined to achieve your objectives and to win against all the odds”.
