In order to develop prevention programmes, firstly, the course
of action leading to a specific injury and, secondly, any
pre-existing risk factors that make an injury in a player more
likely must be identified.
F-MARC analysed the risk factors by comparing baseline
characteristics of injured and uninjured football players, as well
as by video-analysis of injury sequences at FIFA competitions.
With respect to head impacts and head injuries, additional
studies regarding biomechanical and biochemical aspects have been
conducted.
Further, in view of the increasing spread of artificial turf pitches, the incidence and characteristics of injury on artificial as compared to natural grass have been assessed.
