CLÍNICA ESPREGUEIRA MENDES – A FIFA MEDICAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE – is located in FC Porto’s stadium, covering 2,000m2 of space. Its activities include injury prevention and rehabilitation, and the adjoining health and fitness club covering an area of 6,535m2 contains four swimming pools. The team has 85 medical doctors and 40 technicians and nurses, several of whom work for elite football clubs around the world. The clinic has more than 40 medical specialities, including sports medicine, cardiopulmonary medicine, musculoskeletal medicine, orthopaedic surgery, exercise physiology, internal medicine, paediatric cardiology, exercise prescription, sports psychology and rheumatology, all organised in different departments focusing on different parts of the body such as the knee, ankle and foot, the upper limbs and the spine. The clinic has the latest diagnosis technology (MRI, CT scan, X-ray and ultrasound, among others) and fully equipped sports physiotherapy facilities.

The clinic has an agreement to treat all of FC Porto’s athletes for the next 20 years, which speaks volumes for its confidence. This is also reflected by the fact that it is recognised by the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) as an official teaching centre and by the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) as an approved teaching centre.

We won the BES Innovation Prize for the Porto Knee Testing device (PKTD®). This unique technology diagnoses knee ligament injuries, accurately measuring both anteroposterior and rotatory, i.e. dynamic laxity via MRI or CT scans.

Our know-how in sports medicine is evolving thanks to our culture of continuous improvement that has developed over generations. The first member of the Espregueira Mendes family to specialise in orthopaedics was João de Espregueira Mendes, who launched his career in 1926. His son, J.M. Espregueira Mendes MD, was the orthopaedic surgeon at FC Porto between 1978 and 1989. Currently, Professor J.D. Espregueira-Mendes is the clinical director of Clínica Espregueira Mendes - Saúde Atlântica (Clínica do Dragão), as well as the president of ESSKA and a board member of ISAKOS.

Acknowledged for its excellence by international surgeons and honoured to have Prof. Niek van Dijk in charge of the Ankle department, Clínica Espregueira Mendes has solid partnerships relating to surgical care, research and teaching with:

· Santa Maria Hospital – the first Portuguese hospital to achieve ISO 9001 status
