Dakar: Closing ceremony of the fourth edition

The closing ceremony of the fourth edition of the FIFA/CIES sports management programme organised in cooperation with Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) University took place on 23 October in Dakar, in the presence of government authority representatives, the First Secretary of the Swiss Embassy in Senegal, and many representatives of Senegalese sport and of the media.

Under the patronage of Augustin Senghor, the President of the Senegalese Football Federation, the ceremony allowed 33 students from Senegal and the surrounding region to receive their FIFA/CIES Sports Management Programme Diplomas, after a ten-month curriculum in the fields of law, management, marketing, sponsorship, communication, finance and event organisation. Aware of the importance of education for the development of national sport, Mr Senghor emphasised: "We should be grateful to FIFA and to CIES for their significant contribution to training of sports executives in Senegal and in neighbouring countries. We all know that the State is less and less able to meet the needs of the sports world. It is therefore imperative that we find other support and other resources. Appropriate education will allow the managers of sports entities to meet this challenge".

Bertrand Reeb, the President of the CIES, declared: "Without being overly self-satisfied, we have every reason to be pleased with the results achieved. The level of our students increases year after year, in all the member Universities of the International University Network. Programme alumni increasingly occupy high-profile positions. In South Africa, several alumni were hired by the Local Organising Committee for the FIFA 2010 World Cup. In Costa Rica, one of our alumni became the Minister of Sport. In Argentina, Egypt, Chile and Trinidad and Tobago, our Programme participants have been involved in organising international competitions.

As for Mamadou Samba, representing the new graduates, he encouraged his colleagues to work towards promotion and enhancement of sports management: "Sport can take on its full economic and social dimension only if it is professionally managed". The Patron of the ceremony awarded a cheque to the students of the fourth Graduation Class, to encourage them to continue their activities as promoters of best practices in sports management.

The CIES wishes great success to Waliyi Laï, Omer Eusebe, Macodou Babacar, Lassana, Jean Claude, Bocar, Marcelin Sissao, Jean, El Hadji Mor Makha, Waly, Samsidine, Mamadou, Djibril Mafall, Arona, Papa Malick, Abdoul Aziz, Sinthiou Mounel, Moustapha, Mbaye Phillipe, Moustapha, Souleymane, Amadou, Mor, El Hadji Malick, Amadou, Pape Oumar, Pape Amadou, Frédéric, Mamadou, Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane, Ndiaga, Ameth, Saliou et Astou.
