On 26 January 2007, Michel Platini was elected as president of UEFA at the 31st Ordinary UEFA Congress in the German city of Dusseldorf.
The 51-year-old Frenchman edged out the incumbent UEFA President Lennart Johansson and declared his victory "just the beginning of the adventure".
The FIFA President, Joseph S. Blatter, was quick to offer his support for Platini, a long-standing friend and colleague, and wrote a warm letter of congratulations following his new UEFA counterpart's election victory.
A copy of the letter, written in French, can be viewed here on FIFA.com .
