On 26 December, 80 people were travelling from a Christmas Football Competition to their home town of Thaba-Tseka.
For 26 of the people, it proved to be their final journey, as a road traffic accident claimed the lives of 21 players and five supporters. Only one escaped without injury.
Responding to this tragedy, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter has written to Salemane Phafane, the President of the Lesotho FA.
A memorial service will be held at the scene of the accident near the Katse Dam Wednesday. The funerals of the deceased will be held separately by their families over the weekend of 11th to 13th January.
In the letter, Blatter writes:
"It is heartbreaking to see such loss and thus my thoughts and prayers dwell today on the multitude of families who are no doubt suffering so much grief and bereavement as a result of this accident.
Thus, on behalf of the entire FIFA family, I would like to convey our deepest condolences to you, to the Lesotho Football Association and especially to all of the family, friends and loved ones of those lost in this tragedy. Please let them know that today the worldwide football community stands by their side in solidarity."
